@mondayschallenge is a weekly motion design challenge on Instagram, featuring a fresh theme every week for a 5-second loop animation with a limited color palette. I enjoy participating whenever I find the time because each participation serves as a great creativity boost.
What I particularly love about engaging in this challenge is the complete freedom of style it offers. Every time, I get to hone a new skill or experiment with an entirely different style, all within the brief span of just 5 seconds.
The theme is usually announced at the beginning of the week, so I’m brainstorming the ideas in my head without sketching during the work days in the evenings or while running/walking. After I have an idea I really like it takes one full day or a few half-days to create a small illustration+animation like this.
I usually use Procreate for sketching and creating textures, Illustrator for illustrations and After Effects for Animations.
With the theme "LOVE" I was looking for a love story between the 2 unexpected objects.
This idea of "a gum sticking to the shoe because it falls in love" ironically came to me while I was running on the treadmill.
This is the first rough sketch where the shoe looks nothing like SHOE (and gum is also unrecognizable) but the end result layout still looks pretty same!:)

I like sticking eyes on all sorts of things, and with the "BIRTHDAY" theme that week it seemed like an obvious choice to make cakes characters.
The idea was "a cake takes a picture of cakes at a birthday party".
Sketches + color blocking
"Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) ... to be the most depressing day of the year."
The concept behind this animation was that this Monday is blue not only for humans.
